This year’s 2024 Zhuangwei Living Arts Festival invites German artist-in-residence Sonja Waldmeier to join us in the sand-themed creation – Castles made of Sand.

Sand is the most easily obtained natural material, using new special materials and sandbags that are widely used between artists and architecture. They form a new architecture/sculpture that not only becomes a shelter, but also is based on them. In the plant world, after the plants take over and grow weeds until the entire sandbag building becomes a landscape.

I like the idea of ​​the sandbag sculpture slowly being taken over by plants. It changes its form and dissolves on its own over time, artist Songya said, like a Jimi Hendrix song, “a castle made of sand… that eventually floats into the sea.”

This time Sonja would like to invite the public to have fun with sand creation, using second-hand recycled elastic fabrics and local materials to make their own small sand sculptures. When we come to Zhuangwei Sand Dune Ecological Park every time, what we will see is We once participated in the creation and play of the thought-provoking scenery together.
